I agree with Deth, both versions are touching. To be perfectly honest I prefer Peter Gabriel's version. Also, to say that all of Peter Gabriel's songs are mediocre at best implies that you have listened to more than one of his songs. Which means that you took the time to listen to them in the first place. Why continue to listen to them if you don't like them?

Gabriel is awesome, and he rarely covers songs. He is an artist in a world of musicians that are only too happy to sellout.

Peter Gabriel did the audio equivalent of Instagraming this song. He took something that was already beautiful and made it douchey. If you've put any thought into the lyrics of this song, you'd quickly realize that they were meant to be sung like THIS. The Peter Gabriel version just sounds like every other Peter Gabriel song... mediocre at best.

You don't need power for a love song. In fact, you need to go the other direction entirely. The Magnetic Fields have a very sweet, tender song here. Try singing it softly with someone you love, looking them dead in the eyes. It's perfect the way it is.
