Ani Difranco - Coming Up

  1. Apr 27, 2012 at 11:05 AM by vvastedspace

I think it this poem was written very strategically. She personifies capitalism as being a male figure (father), and I think that it really exposes the misogyny that is present in that system. "It's not fate, it's just circumstance". Couldn't have said it better.

In this day and age we need her times 1,000,000. Her assets of critical thinking are beyond profound. Words are hollow until you can fill them with actions.

Beautiful woman, melts me every time I listen to her speak

that's an excellent interpretation. thing is, I don't think people understood many of her messages for a very long time. it's a shame many people will not get to know Ani.

She looks a bit stoned.I'd be even more impressed by her flowing if it turned out she was stoned.

My interpretation is that the man in the penthouse is not God, but a representative of the rich who have just as much power in a capitalist state. He is not phased by those suffering below, reflecting the increasing gap between rich and poor, and ultimate inequity. She sees no reason in trying to love, but rather in helping those in a similar position, sending a warning to those above, that if they don't begin to implement change, she, and the others, will 'come up', demanding it, or else.

how do you interpret this poem?

  17. Dec 11, 2011 at 06:09 PM by OverXposedKC91

i could be wrong but this is how i interpret the poem. she speaks on a man in the penthouse who is God and he's watching the pathetic people of the world. she's had several negative experiences with men and God isn't helping her, just watching. she hasnt been satisfied and shes become used to her circumstances but if God doesn't make things better she's "coming up" which to me means shes committing suicide or she's going to make some demands.. thats what i got from the poem

i feel really slow because i honestly cant grasp what she's talking about..i love her flow and the rhythm was impeccable but without stupid replies could someone honestly explain this poem to me..

Oh man, the last stanza <3 And out of curiosity, does anyone think this might not just be a literal sense but an extended metaphor for the way her mind works? The notes being thoughts and the change sent down by god ideas?
